Have you ever wondered if you are emotionally intelligent or not? This praised skill is arguably much more valuable than a high IQ. In fact, experts claim that people who are emotionally intelligent, have a better control over their lives, and tend to go further in life. However, what does it mean to be emotionally intelligent?
According to research, emotional intelligence is ”being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively), and learning how to manage those emotions especially when we are under pressure.’‘ Therefore, it’s clear to see that it’s mostly acquired, and can make life so much less complicated-mentally- for you.
You Communicate Assertively
One of the first noticeable traits about a person, is the way they communicate. This includes both how they express themselves, and how they react to feedback. In fact, communication is only key when it’s bound by understanding on the other end of the line. According to Dr. Kate Dow, PhD, LPCC, a psychologist, empowerment coach, if you are emotionally intelligent, you can communicate assertively. The ability of expressing concern, conflict and such with a calm and strait forward attitude implies confidence and correct control of emotions.
You Are Empathetic
In addition to communicating thoroughly, another that that distinguishes emotionally intelligent people from those who are not, are their sentiments. Moreover, empathy doesn’t mean reacting based on what you have lived only, but rather always put yourself in other people’s shoes. Empathy is what we always look for in someone when developing a connection. If someone is able to understand, be compassionate, see under the lines, then they are capable of allowing themselves to be vulnerable.
You Don’t Take Things Personally
Furthermore, a person’s reaction to life is a reflection of who they are. When you develop enough confidence in yourself, you just don’t let anything affect you. In addition, being aware that people’s perception of you is not always accurate can save you lots of headaches. Not taking things personally, and instead guiding your energy towards things you can control makes you an emotionally stable person. You know when to react and how to do it right. And, you don’t allow others to ruin your day, because you are conscious that your self-esteem can not be damaged by your exterior.
You Accept Criticism
Accepting constructive criticism is key in your personal and professional development. It demonstrates maturity, and acknowledgement and readiness to become better. However, knowing when you are receiving constructive criticism, and when someone is just plain humiliating you is also important. Emotionally intelligent people know that any chance to better their selves is an opportunity. Yet, they are also intuitive and can easily tell if someone is trying to build them up, or break them instead.
You Have Good Social Skills
In order to know if you are emotionally intelligent or not, look at the way you interact with people. Yes, being a social butterfly and getting along with everyone is a gift, we know. But, are you able to develop a deep connection with people? Or is your relationship with them is merely superficial? There’s quite a difference between the two. In fact, ”a large part of emotional intelligence has to do with connecting with others and reading others” as explained by Kari Knutson, a professional speaker and counselor. Therefore, learning to adapt to situations and be your true self, is a big sign you are emotionally intelligent.
